5 Tips to Curb the Candy Overload for Halloween

It’s that wonderful, spooky time of year again, and we’re all yearning for all the sweet, seasonal staples: chocolate brownie monsters, peanut butter bars, candy-laced cookies, creamy apple pie, and so much more. While some of us can limit ourselves to a single slice or piece, the same cannot be said for most kids.

Now, instead of completely eliminating these treats, you can practice some smart parental practices that can curb your kids’ sugar rush and keep them happy in one go. Here’s what you can do!

No sweets on an empty stomach

Here’ the simplest, yet smartest hack of all: make sure your little ones have regular, nutritious meals, and especially before any trick-or-treating around the neighborhood. That alone can be the easiest way to enable self-regulation for them, as they’ll be full and satisfied after having a meal that will keep them satiated for several hours.

  • Introduce fruity snacks, such as fruit salads, and roasted nuts and seeds, provided your kids have no allergies or food sensitivities to worry about.
  • Time your meals so that your kids roughly at the same time every day, it will help you regulate their hunger and notice when their cravings might be more likely to kick in, and how to prevent them!
  • Have sugar-free, healthy treats around the house to instill this healthy habit into your youngsters, then they’ll be far less likely to reach for too much candy during Halloween.

  • Chewy pumpkin cookies with coconut and almond flour, ideal for those with a true sweet tooth, but looking out for their health. Add some vanilla frosting to turn them into mummies!
  • Yogurt-granola cups with fresh berries.
  • Apple and peanut butter are always a winning combo!
  • Mini pumpkin cinnamon cheesecakes for a classic with a healthy twist.
  • Loads of healthy muffin recipes you can decorate for a truly creepy impact.

Spread the joy – donate the extra candy

Halloween is the perfect opportunity to get into the holiday spirit and teach your youngsters to be grateful and to appreciate the abundance they’re enjoying. At the same time, teach them to share! Talk to them about giving away the extra candy they collect from their trick-or-treating fest.

You can turn it into a family activity, creating little gift baskets for other kids in the area or for youngsters in hospitals. They can also create little sweet gifts for other family members, so that they can take their time making the right choices for everyone they love.

Anyone called for the Switch Witch?

When it’s time to see all the Halloween loot, have a bundle of little presents prepared, so that the Switch Witch can swap the candy for these gifts. You can offer coloring pencils, new notebooks, story books, small toys, and similar items that your kids will enjoy for much longer than the candy.

You can also throw in healthy treats like MetaKids Multi Soft Chew, which are both delicious and packed with vitamins. Not a bad idea to swap gummy bears for a packet of these nutritious treats and a set of pencils!

Settle on daily limits with your kids

Building healthy habits doesn’t stop with the holidays! That said, the same way you teach your kids to practice moderation during the year, make sure to talk to them about daily sweet treat limits for Halloween.

If that means having one or two pieces of candy after lunch, that means they should stick to that practice during the holidays, too, just make sure to revise this practice with them, so that you’re on the same page.

Of course, some kids might be tougher to negotiate with when it comes to candy, but it’s crucial to stand your ground and make sure to protect their wellbeing first and foremost. It’s important to help them build healthy habits from a young age, so that the abundance of Halloween candy doesn’t become an everyday expectation, let alone a craving. Keep your kids happy and healthy, even during these spooky times!

What our
patients
are saying

Always get clarity and understanding…

Dianne has always help me understand the complicated issues of hypothyroidism, understanding the symptoms and long term effects. She has helped with my dietary needs and overall well being. Highly recommend if you are still feeling the symptoms even if your on traditional medications.

The best part of talking with new patients…

I have worked with Dianne Hinton at Calmglow for 4 years. I receive calls from new patients every day. I think the best part of talking with new patients is that I give them the knowledge and hope in knowing that I–like all of Dianne’s staff–was her patient before her employee. I think that says a lot about Dianne as a practitioner. She is very compassionate and caring towards each individual patient.

Diane Hinton saved my life!

After over a year of traditional doctors misdiagnosing and mistreating my illness, Diane immediately got it right. She identified the root cause of my illness, and I went from being chronically ill to healed and healthy in less than a year. Diane listens to and cares for her patients like no one I’ve ever known. I highly recommend her for diagnosing the true health issues, rather than just treating your symptoms.

My husband and I just love Calmglow …

Just what is Functional Medicine?  Simply put…. I call it getting to the “cause” of a health issue. Rashes, High Pressure, Arthritis, Obesity, Insomnia, and Fatigue are a few of the issues she’s helped us with.  But what I really like best is; she doesn’t say “here, take this pill” and it’ll “treat the symptoms”.  She treats the “cause” of those symptoms so they truly go away without requiring “pills”.  Our bodies are healing, and the we feel we’re the healthiest we’ve been in a long time! What we’ve discovered about the manner in which our bodies “had been” functioning previously, from the in depth tests she recommends, was pretty astounding. We’ve learned so much since starting to see her as our practitioner, I would never choose to go back to an Allopathic doctor!
