Healthy Halloween – 5 Sweet Alternatives Both Kids and Grownups Will Love

The spookiest time of the year is also the most notorious for the amount of pure sugar our little ones consume – and we succumb to our own cravings, too. The worm-shaped gummy delights, themed cookies, all the way to sweet muffins are all Halloween classics we don’t want to forego during the holiday season.

And yet, there are even more delicious treats that you won’t even have to trick your kids into eating! You’ll love them and perhaps make them well after Halloween, just because they taste devilishly good, and they pack quite a nutritious punch as well.

As the main treat of the season, pumpkins can be your main source of healthy inspiration for your Halloween menu. They can be used for so much more than your typical decorations! For example, they are wonderful as the basis for healthy muffins, and the puree can serve as perfect muffin filling, sweetened with natural sweeteners such as honey.

To give them a true fall kick, add some cinnamon and your kids will absolutely love them. Keep in mind that the pumpkin-cinnamon combo works well for healthy cookies and other treats, too.

Wickedly good, protein smoothies

Shakes and smoothies are a great way to diversify your holiday feast. Not to mention that they can look hellishly delightful depending on the ingredients you choose, and how you decorate them together with your little ones.

Use fruit and milk of your choice as the basis, but also add your chocolate protein mix for added flavor and to make it much, much more satiating. Suddenly, you’ve turned an ordinary sip into an explosion of flavors, and better yet, one that will be balanced in terms of macro and micronutrients.

For parents who know their way around blenders and food processors, you know that you can mix and match so many different flavors into a single, sweet bite-sized ball for your kids. Halloween is the perfect opportunity to do just that!

Blend your almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, or any other nutty favorites of your kids into a fine powder. Add dates or bananas for sweetness and that chewy texture, but oats, nut butters, and dried fruits are also excellent candidates to give you ample energy for the entire holiday season. Add some spider legs or bat wings and witch hats for decoration.

cups with fruit

Fruit salads are colorful enough for kids to love them, but since it’s Halloween, you need to give your fruity treats a bit of a bizarre twist. Carve out your oranges in the shape of jack-o’-lanterns and fill them up with bits of fruit, dark chocolate, and one or two vitamin-loaded chewables, depending on their daily dose needs.

Shape your fruit bits into ghosts, spiders, eyeballs, bats, and Frankenstein heads, and you’ll have a truly monstrous feast that’s both healthy and delicious.

juicy fruit ice creams

Nothing sinister about these popsicles

The slightly chillier weather has never prevented anyone, especially residing in California, to create a whole tray of delightful popsicles to serve for Halloween. Alas, the traditional kind often include too much sugar, which can have a negative impact on your gut health.

Instead, all you need is some fruit and a little bit of imagination. For example, banana halves make for perfect frozen ghosts! Add little chocolate buttons for their eyes, and you’re good to go – they’re loaded with vitamins and minerals, and they look eerie-licious!

Halloween is a time of fun, but the only trick you’ll need to play is the one on your kids’ bellies: replace your typical, sugar-loaded items with these and similarly creative goodies – it’ll be a treat! Add to that, if you need any more help in refining your own or your kids’ diet, we’re one appointment away from guiding you towards wellbeing tailored to your own needs.

What our
patients
are saying

Always get clarity and understanding…

Dianne has always help me understand the complicated issues of hypothyroidism, understanding the symptoms and long term effects. She has helped with my dietary needs and overall well being. Highly recommend if you are still feeling the symptoms even if your on traditional medications.

The best part of talking with new patients…

I have worked with Dianne Hinton at Calmglow for 4 years. I receive calls from new patients every day. I think the best part of talking with new patients is that I give them the knowledge and hope in knowing that I–like all of Dianne’s staff–was her patient before her employee. I think that says a lot about Dianne as a practitioner. She is very compassionate and caring towards each individual patient.

Diane Hinton saved my life!

After over a year of traditional doctors misdiagnosing and mistreating my illness, Diane immediately got it right. She identified the root cause of my illness, and I went from being chronically ill to healed and healthy in less than a year. Diane listens to and cares for her patients like no one I’ve ever known. I highly recommend her for diagnosing the true health issues, rather than just treating your symptoms.

My husband and I just love Calmglow …

Just what is Functional Medicine?  Simply put…. I call it getting to the “cause” of a health issue. Rashes, High Pressure, Arthritis, Obesity, Insomnia, and Fatigue are a few of the issues she’s helped us with.  But what I really like best is; she doesn’t say “here, take this pill” and it’ll “treat the symptoms”.  She treats the “cause” of those symptoms so they truly go away without requiring “pills”.  Our bodies are healing, and the we feel we’re the healthiest we’ve been in a long time! What we’ve discovered about the manner in which our bodies “had been” functioning previously, from the in depth tests she recommends, was pretty astounding. We’ve learned so much since starting to see her as our practitioner, I would never choose to go back to an Allopathic doctor!
