Impact Of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) On Our Health

Environmental Pollutants

In the air we breathe and the water we drink pollutants lurk. Even in the relatively untouched and pristine Arctic, persistent organic pollutants have been found in the air, water, soil, plants and animals.

What Are Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)?

According to the dictionary, persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are a hazardous organic chemical compound that is resistant to biodegradation and thus remains in the environment for a long time.  As noted in the EPA article: “Persistent Organic Pollutants: A Global Issue, A Global Response,” https://www.epa.gov/international-cooperation/persistent-organic-pollutants-global-issue-global-response more than ninety countries have joined forces to address this issue.  The good news is that improvements have been seen, such as the returning eagle population after the banning of DDT.  The troubling news is POP environmental contamination is widespread, even in areas where POPs have never been used (such as the Arctic), and will remain in the environment years after their introduction to the environment due to their resistance to breaking down.

Health Implications of POPs

In addition to negatively affecting the environment of the world, these toxic chemicals adversely affect human health. Avoiding them in today’s modern world is impossible. They are in our carpet, wall paint, food we consume, and more.  While the health implications are not fully understood, POPs exposure can cause dysfunction, disruption and disorders in our bodies.  Endocrine disruption, reproductive and immune dysfunction, brain and nervous system disorders, birth defects and cancer are associated with POPs exposure.

Removal of POPs

Detoxifying POPs toxins which are stored in the fat cells of our bodies can be a challenge. As noted by the Institute of Functional Medicine, weight loss can liberate toxins from fatty tissue, increasing blood levels and leading to a host of symptoms and eventual reabsorption of POPs. Therefore, eliminating these pollutants requires excreting the contaminants from fat and bypassing enterohepatic recirculation. (Discussed fully in Stephen J. Genius’ Human and Experimental Toxicology article: “Elimination of persistent toxicants from the human body.” https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0960327110368417)

What our
patients
are saying

Always get clarity and understanding…

Dianne has always help me understand the complicated issues of hypothyroidism, understanding the symptoms and long term effects. She has helped with my dietary needs and overall well being. Highly recommend if you are still feeling the symptoms even if your on traditional medications.

The best part of talking with new patients…

I have worked with Dianne Hinton at Calmglow for 4 years. I receive calls from new patients every day. I think the best part of talking with new patients is that I give them the knowledge and hope in knowing that I–like all of Dianne’s staff–was her patient before her employee. I think that says a lot about Dianne as a practitioner. She is very compassionate and caring towards each individual patient.

Diane Hinton saved my life!

After over a year of traditional doctors misdiagnosing and mistreating my illness, Diane immediately got it right. She identified the root cause of my illness, and I went from being chronically ill to healed and healthy in less than a year. Diane listens to and cares for her patients like no one I’ve ever known. I highly recommend her for diagnosing the true health issues, rather than just treating your symptoms.

My husband and I just love Calmglow …

Just what is Functional Medicine?  Simply put…. I call it getting to the “cause” of a health issue. Rashes, High Pressure, Arthritis, Obesity, Insomnia, and Fatigue are a few of the issues she’s helped us with.  But what I really like best is; she doesn’t say “here, take this pill” and it’ll “treat the symptoms”.  She treats the “cause” of those symptoms so they truly go away without requiring “pills”.  Our bodies are healing, and the we feel we’re the healthiest we’ve been in a long time! What we’ve discovered about the manner in which our bodies “had been” functioning previously, from the in depth tests she recommends, was pretty astounding. We’ve learned so much since starting to see her as our practitioner, I would never choose to go back to an Allopathic doctor!
